Devil Comics Commentary: DC Comics Solicitations for October 2011

Following last month’s announcement of releasing 52 new #1s in September, DC Comics provided their justification at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con as well as details of various characters and advanced artwork. Dan DiDio added on CBR TV the titles may find an audience consisting of print or digital or both. The full relaunch of the entire DC line will give a full analysis of the comic book industry on both print and digital fronts.

Todd McFarlane brought his criticism to the table by analyzing the DC Comics’ relaunch as well as showcasing how he would have done it. McFarlane believes there is too much product too soon and DC Comics should slowly roll out their new series over a span of the year to capture more publicity. He compares how he has done it with his toy line however the comic industry works much differently with short attention spans to capture the initial excitement.

Our pull list for October contains the same series as September along with new additions as we get more information on each title. Now we begin our pull list with their flagship title Justice League. The new Justice League series sets its story 5 years in the past and gathers the rest of the heroes together by Flashpoint architect Geoff Johns and superstar artist Jim Lee. Geoff Johns is also writing the new Aquaman series after the events of Brightest Day.

Brian Azzarello tackles the Princess of Paradise Island Wonder Woman following his take on Batman within Flashpoint: Batman – Knight of Vengeance. Batman and the Joker are reinterpreted within the Flashpoint Universe with Thomas Wayne and Martha in key roles. Azzarello also teams up with his former 100 bullets artist Eduardo Risso to bring us Spaceman.

Much like the new Justice League series, Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman) is bringing Superman back to his roots in Action Comics. Superman is single and isolated after losing both set of parents. Morrison’s first arc introduces us to this new man of steel while George Perez brings us his current adventures within Superman.

Peter J. Tomasi brings the father and son team-up within Batman and Robin while Batgirl brings back Barbara Gordon and Kate Kane stars in Batwoman. These three new series will bring a different dynamic to the bat-family versus what we have seen before in the Huntress, Nightwing, and Catwoman.

Green Lantern titles took a surprising turn as the new series stars Thaal Sinestro as a Green Lantern taking on his own Sinestro Corps. On the list are all the franchise series including Green Lantern Corps, Green Lantern: New Guardians, and Red Lanterns.

Other series will continue to be on the pull list unless they do not hold up to expectations including Justice League Dark, Swamp Thing, Resurrection Man, I, Vampire, Stormwatch, Voodoo, and Static Shock.

DC has released some new number #1s this month in the form of limited series. The only one worth watching in Paul Levitz’s Legion: Secret Origin. The Legion is getting attention this month with a reprint of Alan Davis’ Superboy’s Legion, which was beautifully drawn and released in 2001.

Finally Vertigo Fables brings us the story of the current events within Oz. We recently got a glimpse of Dorothy Gale within Cinderella: Fables are Forever, which could have had a better ending to a terrific story.

DC Comics seems to be on the right track of experimenting on their titles after the September relaunch. So titles may have higher sales within the digital market rather than print however time will tell.
